Logo design process

The typical logo design process is 3-6 steps depending on what best suits your needs, and the fees proposed will reflect that. For example, a full responsive logo suite featuring a brand new logo design is a more involved process than making revisions to an existing logo or providing guidance for a DIY effort.

  1. Paperwork
This document is to give you a general overview of the design process so you know what to expect. The questionnaire helps me understand what you are looking for, even if you have trouble describing it or don’t know exactly what you want or need. If I need any clarification beyond your answers in the questionnaire, I may send an email and/or schedule a video chat to make sure I understand correctly. After that, I can send a proposal and we can work out the terms. Once that’s figured out, we can sign a contract and I’ll get to work!

  2. First draft – multiple options
If you choose to have me create a brand new design from scratch, the first draft will include 3-5 logo designs in black and gray for you to review and provide feedback, plus two more rounds of revisions if needed. If you choose to have me revise a pre-existing logo, either one you already have or one you have chosen from another source like a stock image site, this step may be skipped.

  3. Second draft – single concept
Feedback from the first draft is incorporated and a single logo is presented in black and gray for review. Two additional rounds of revisions are included if needed.

  4. Color
Up to 3 color schemes will be applied to the approved logo for review and one additional round of revisions if needed. If we are working with a design that you have provided or if you have an established color scheme you do not wish to alter, this step may be skipped.

  5. Responsive suite
If a full responsive suite (set of related designs for different uses) is best option, the suite will be built out after the main logo design and color scheme are finished and approved. More explanation and examples of responsive logos can be found here.

Two rounds of revisions are included if needed. If you have chosen not to go with the responsive option or if the design is such that it is not appropriate, this step may be skipped.

  6. Final files
Once everything is approved, I will send the invoice and save out all the files you may need: editable design files, high resolution files for print, files with transparent backgrounds for web, full color and single color of each. I will also include a document that has details about the exact colors and fonts used in the logos.

NOTE: If more rounds of revisions are needed than are included in the chosen design package, a fee of $20 per round of revision will be added to the final invoice.
